Makar Sankranti & Pongal
The harvest and the sun's journey north
Cosmic Transitions and Agrarian Thanksgiving
Makar Sankranti is one of the rare Indian festivals calculated according to the solar cycle rather than the lunar calendar. It marks the transition of the Sun (Surya) into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara) and the onset of Uttarayan—the sacred six-month northward celestial journey of the sun.
This period heralds warmer days, longer daylight, and the joyous culmination of the winter agricultural harvest. Communities across every state gather to express gratitude to the elements: the life-giving sun, fertile soil, flowing rivers, and working cattle. Traditional recipes feature newly harvested rice, freshly pressed sugarcane jaggery, and warming sesame seeds (til), celebrated as symbols of enduring sweetness and cordiality. Whether through the soaring kites of Gujarat, the brimming clay pots of Tamil Nadu, or the fragrant bonfires of Punjab and Assam, the festival unites the nation in profound thankfulness.
How it is celebrated across India
Explore the distinct customs and mythological roots across 4 diverse regions:
Thai Pongal
A four-day thanksgiving harvest celebration. Freshly harvested rice is boiled with jaggery and fresh milk in ornate clay pots until it overflows over firewood, greeted by families joyfully shouting 'Pongalo Pongal!' to the Sun God.
Uttarayan
The sky comes alive with millions of fighting kites of every hue as the sun transitions into Capricorn. Families gather on rooftops from dawn till dusk with shouts of 'Kai Po Che!', savoring Undhiyu and sesame-chikki delicacies.
Magh Bihu
Marks the end of the harvesting season with community feasting and merrymaking. Villagers construct towering bamboo huts called Bhelaghar and Meji, offering prayers and rice cakes (pitha) before lighting them at sunrise.
Lohri
The winter bonfire festival honoring the passing of the winter solstice. Families toss sesame seeds, gur, and rewri into towering sacred bonfires, performing high-spirited Bhangra and Giddha dances around the amber flames.
